AirPods - Connect to this iPhone automatically - how to enable / disable?

AirPods have proven to be an easy-to-use accessory for people with Apple devices. Although AirPods are meant to connect automatically to your iPhone or other paired devices as soon as they are out of their charging case, sometimes it’s better to disable this feature.

In this blog post, we explain how to enable or disable the setting for AirPods to connect to this iPhone automatically. We’ve also included a video transcript to help you better understand the process.

By default, the connect-to-iPhone-automatically option is already set. This means that your AirPods will try to connect to the last device with which they were used, as soon as they’re out of their charging case. For example, when you take them out of their case and put them in your ears, they will automatically connect to your iPhone. The same will happen if you open your MacBook or other Apple devices.

If you only want them to connect to your MacBook, you can change this default setting. There are two options available: “when last connected to this iPhone” and “when last connected to this MacBook”. By selecting the first option, your AirPods will only automatically connect to your iPhone if it was the last device used. By selecting the second option, they will only connect to your MacBook; So when you take them out of their charging case, they will connect only to your MacBook.

Here are the steps to enable or disable automatic AirPods connection:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, go to the Settings app
  2. Tap on Bluetooth
  3. Find your AirPods on the list and tap on the "i" icon to the right of its name
  4. Tap on “Connect to This iPhone/iPad/Apple Watch Automatically”
  5. Change the settings to your preferred option

Alternatively, on your MacBook, just follow these steps to enable or disable it:

  1. Click on the Apple icon on the top left corner of your screen
  2. Go to System Preferences
  3. Click on Bluetooth
  4. Find your AirPods on the list and click on the “Options” button on the right-hand side
  5. Choose your preferred option under “Connect to This Mac Automatically”

That’s it! Now you know how to enable or disable automatic connection for your AirPods. It’s a great way to control which devices your AirPods can interact with, and it’s especially useful for people who don't want their AirPods connected automatically to other devices they’re not using.
