New Instagram SECRET TWITTER CLONE aka “Barcelona” or “P92” - what we know so far? When available?

Instagram is reportedly developing a new Twitter clone app, which TechCrunch has dubbed the “Barcelona” or “P92” project. While Meta has remained quiet about this development, the app is set to launch in the summer of 2023, according to an email that was shared with a limited group of creators.

The new Meta app will be a stand-alone, text-based service that is partially integrated with Instagram. Users will retain their Instagram verification and handle, and their followers will receive notifications inviting them to follow the user on the new platform. Meta also plans to encourage high-profile public figures to use this new service to get early access and onboard influencers, actors, athletes, producers, showrunners, and comedians.

While Mastodon, Blue Sky, and other apps have already gained a head start in the race to create the next Twitter alternative, Meta claims to have a competitive advantage in reaching billions of users across its other family of apps, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger.

Leah Haberman posted examples of the new text-based app on Twitter, which appears to have a design that merges elements of Instagram and Twitter. Users will be able to attach links, photos, and videos to their text-based posts and can engage with likes and replies. The app will allow users to bring their followers with them in one tap, and all their settings will carry over, including who can reply and mention their account.

Moreover, this new app will be compatible with other apps like Mastodon, enabling users on those platforms to follow, search for, and interact with profiles and content. Creators may even receive recommendations by the app to users who don't follow them yet.

The new app will have the same community guidelines as Instagram, and users can log in with their Instagram credentials, with blogs and hidden words from Instagram carrying over.

Like any new product, there is no guarantee of success, and Meta has sunsetted several apps over the years. It remains to be seen how the Barcelona or P92 project will play out, but it could be an exciting new product for users looking for a fresh social experience.
